Safe where you live

Article 19 of the UNCRC states governments should ensure that children are cared for properly, and protected from violence abuse and neglect.

“I think people should be able to go out and not be scared of violence and abuse, because of the way you are and the way you dress. I am scared that someone will get hurt. So we need more police around our community”. This was a statement from one of the children and young people at the event

It’s a fact that in 2006, 31% of shooting victims in London were children. Click on the youtube footage and see what its like for some other young people. Is there a problem with knives in your area? What do you think needs to change to make you feel safe where you live?

How can the Children’s Commissioner make a difference?

Gangs

My cousin has been stabbed by a gang and it was heart wrenching to know that a group of youths did that. not all youths are like that though.

Gangs

I think they get to much publicity and makes more people want to join gangs. There are more gangs then people know about. They should try to stop gangs out in the street and maybe in schools.

Everybody is very concerend

Everybody is very concerend about gangs these days. When I was a lad I belonged to a group of boys who were my mates and we did great things together but we weren’t violent and we didn’t do anti-social behaviour. So it’s natural and normal for children to want to belong to groups. However what’s new and really worrying is all the publicity that’s been given to violent gangs and with young people carrying knives and guns.

Why do you think such young people belong to gangs? Some adults say it’s because kids don’t have happy families and look to gangs for protection and a sense of belonging.

What do you think we should do to stop kids from joining gangs?

I really do agree with you that far too many of the newspapers show kids to be thugs, hoodies and yobs and that’s not right. How do you think we should tackle the newspapers? I’ve been to the press complainrs commission with young people from the youth parliament to complain about the negative portrayal of young people. Are your local newspapers for or against kids? Do you think adults in your locality should encourage newspapers to be more positive? 10 times more young people volunteer to do good things than cause trouble.

Be pleased to hear what you think.

knives

You must be over 18 to buy knives of any kind. Police should stop and search all youths if knives are found they should be sent to court and be questioned why they had a knife. so if they were going to hurt somebody they should be sent to prison.

knives

However in france and other countries you can buy knives at a younger age! Someone I know somebody who bought a knife aged 7.

Thanks for your really great

Thanks for your really great post. i am very concerend by what children and young people tell me about their fear of knives and knife crime. We need to ask two questions. First why do young people carry knives in the first place and second, what can we do about it? Some children carry knives to feel safe. Others to appear cool, and a small number to cause serious problems.

Adults have to make it absolutely clear that carrying knives in public is just not acceptable today and if you do carry a knife you’ll be punished. What do you think about that?

Some school shave got metal-detectors, is that a good idea?

How do you think those carrying knives should be punished?

It’s my view that rather like buying cigarettes and alcohol you should have to prove your age when buying knives, but that of course wont stop older people buying them for you. What do you think we should do about all of this?

Do you think it’s right for police to stop young people and search them?

knives and gangs

it isnt good these days the way children go around with knives but i don’t think that it is right that every young person gets stopped and searched everytime the police see them. That is wrong. And i think children belong in gangs too feel safe in themselves aswell as too look hard. You hear about so many rapings these days that young people to form groups to protect eachother. And if the police see gangs then they are going to pull them up which is still not right as all children in gangs are not out to course trouble.

Knives

People should not be allowed to carry knives. The police should continue confiscating knives and arresting people.
